Burg Schnellenberg, whose origins date back to 1222, was built on the orders of the Archbishop of Cologne, Engelbert von Berg, to fortify Attendorn and secure the Heidenstraße. An agreement with the Count of der Mark attests to the importance of the castle at the time, to which two castle fiefs were transferred. In the 16th century, the castle complex was extensively extended in the Renaissance style by the Baron von Fürstenberg-Herdringen family, who still own it today.
Today, Burg Schnellenberg is home to a 4-star hotel with an adjoining restaurant. Its architectural design makes it one of the largest preserved castle complexes in Westfalen. Visitors have the opportunity to visit the fully preserved Renaissance chapel, the knights' hall and the court arbor. The castle's cross vault also provides a backdrop for civil wedding ceremonies, organized by the town of Attendorn.
