More and more people are looking for new and exciting ways to explore nature and test their limits. One activity that has become increasingly popular in recent years is gravel biking. And where better to do this than in the Sauerland Trekking Park?
Here you do without fixed accommodation and stay overnight in a tent on bookable trekking pitches. There are 9 trekking camps available for your multi-day gravel tours around Willingen and Diemelsee. Each nature camp offers you pure nature and great panoramic views.
The route on the first day takes us through Hochsauerland, past the Mühlenkopfschanze, where the annual World Cup ski jump takes place, to the Hohe Pön hiking area. We leave Hessen and ride through the small village of Titmaringhausen. From the bottom of the valley, we follow beautiful forest paths to Küstelberg and through the Orketal to Winterberg. From here, we gravel along the Ruhr cycle path to Niedersfeld and then wind our way to the "Neuer Hagen" nature reserve. We cross the Langenberg to reach our first recommended trekking spot "U4) Ritzhagen near Willingen".On the second day, we have to plan a few more kilometers, so we start in the morning, maybe buy some provisions in Willingen and then we set off. We start by warming up at a relaxed pace as far as Brilon-Wald before tackling the first climb. The next intermediate destination is the Borbeck Chapel, which is located on the hill of the same name and is also part of an early medieval rampart. With little elevation gain, the route continues via the villages of Petersberg, Brilon and Messinghausen to Helminghausen, a village at the foot of the Diemel dam. Climbing is the order of the day here to reach our next trekking site. A wonderful serpentine path of asphalt and gravel leads us to the "D1) St. Muffert bei Heringhausen" platform high above the Diemelsee. On the third day, we head over the Dommel into Upland. It is worth making a detour to the Dommel tower, where you can see the route you have covered and the route ahead from above. Above Eimelrod there is another sleeping place "U2) Bockelau bei Eimelrod", above the golden vein of the Sauerland. On the fourth day, the route leads via the small Bömighausen lake to Welleringhausen, where one of the oldest churches in Upland is located. Our next or last overnight destination is "U3) Büller Höhe near Usseln", close to the Milky Way and the "Hengböhl Quarry" soul place. The purpose of this overnight stay is that you can start your journey home by car the next day rested or arrive on time for your train connection. After all, it is only a few kilometers from Usseln to the destination of our beautiful tour via the Diemelquelle to Willingen.
We recommend sufficient drinking water, tent and tent cord, food, toilet paper, rainproof clothing (functional and suitable for the weather), rucksack, first aid kit, air pump, repair kit and multitool. Minimum sensible rim width 24 mm for 2.25" tires or 28 mm for 2.4" tires, travel with tread, low air pressure 6 to 7 bar. Detailed information at www.trekkingpark.de
Although the route is mainly on paved gravel paths and asphalt farm tracks, there are also some technical passages from time to time that require some riding skills in wet conditions.
Please be sure to book your trekking pitches in advance at www.trekkingpark.de, as there is high demand in summer.
