The Westfälische Salzroute follows the historical trail of salt along the Hellweg, from the Kurpark Unna-Königsborn to the Kütfelsen in Salzkotten. Cyclists and hikers can experience a culturally rich region on this themed route, whose identity is shaped by salt production. Cultural stops such as the Westfalen Salzwelten adventure museum in Bad Sassendorf are integrated along the way. The route is characterized by its moderate level of difficulty. It runs mainly on asphalted farm tracks away from busy main roads and on dedicated cycle paths. The Hellweg-Börde presents itself with wide fields, characteristic rows of trees and rural villages. Numerous restaurants invite you to enjoy typical regional culinary breaks. The spas of Bad Sassendorf, Bad Waldliesborn and Bad Westernkotten complete the offer with brine health treatments. The Hellweg, once the central trade axis from Duisburg to Paderborn, played a key role in the distribution of goods such as salt from Soest, Werl and Unna and iron goods from Sauerland to the entire Hanseatic region. This historical and economic significance can be experienced immersively along the Westfälische Salzroute.
