The red squirrel tour is part of Willingen's MTB routes for children. These are so well networked and signposted that parents and children can decide during the tour which route they want to take and how long the route should be.

Important: The requirement profiles are only guidelines - these can of course vary from child to child. Children should not ride alone. Mountain bikes are required in any case. Riding the routes is at your own risk. In some places, hikers or car traffic may be on the same routes.

Directions

The squirrel with the red symbol goes through the beautiful Strycktal up to Hochheide. The tour takes us past the Mühlenkopfschanze and continues along the idyllic course of the Itter stream. At the end of the valley, there is a real climb up to the Hessen/NRW state border. We follow the boundary stones to the right as far as the "Zum Streit" refuge, where the trail splits between the red squirrel and black squirrel tours. The red squirrel tour continues with the description red bird over the "Neuer Hagen" nature reserve, one of the highest areas of high heath in Europe. At the end of the heath area, the route returns to a firm path and the managed Hochheide Hütte is already on the left with a wonderful view of the Hochsauerland. If you don't want to take a break, follow the red bird on the right to the Langenberg, the highest mountain in NRW. After reaching the highest point, the route continues along the Langenberg in an easy descent. On this descent, we cross the Sonnenlift and have a wonderful view of Willingen. At the next lift, the descent is a little steeper and the brakes should work well here and the children should be made aware that there may also be hikers on the way and that they should adjust their speed accordingly. What would a children's tour be if there was no reward for the effort? The summer toboggan run is located on the right-hand side at the start of Willingen and is fun for young and old alike, so lock up your bike and finish the day.

Equipment

We recommend a helmet, functional, weather-appropriate cycling clothing, backpack food, sufficient fluids (water, tea), air pump, repair kit and multi-tool.
