Overcoming the ascent to the ridge of the Rothaargebirge near Schanze opens up a panorama of vastness. The renowned Rothaarsteig trail crosses here, complemented by gastronomic opportunities for regeneration. This passage was once the scene of intense mountain time trials that put cyclists' performance to the test every year.

Directions
After the start at the village square in Grafschaft, the ascent begins quite moderately out of the village. It doesn't actually get much steeper until you reach the summit. Special signposting shows you how far it is to the finish and how many meters in altitude are still waiting for you.
Equipment
Wearing a bicycle helmet should be a matter of course for all cyclists. Before setting off, check that your bike is in perfect condition. For demanding tours, we recommend packing plenty of drinks and snacks.
Safety guidelines
A rescue point system has been installed throughout the region (Soest district, Hochsauerlandkreis, Märkischer Kreis, Olpe district and Siegen-Wittgenstein district). Rescue points can be found on the information boards at the junctions of the Südwestfalen cycle network.
Author Tip
Kyrill-Pfad: On January 18, 2007, storm Kyrill destroyed large areas of forest in Südwestfalen. In Schanze, the forest on an area owned by the state has been preserved as Kyrill left it.
Public transit
Rail connection in Lennestadt-Altenhundem or Meschede. From there, continue by bus to Grafschaft.
How to get there
The ascent begins right in the center of Schmallenberg-Grafschaft. Follow the signs in the direction of Schanze.
As Schanze is a popular excursion destination, especially on nice weekends, you can expect increased car and motorcycle traffic.
