The Unna Center for International Light Art, an important anchor point on the Route of Industrial Heritage, unites seemingly contradictory spheres. Situated on the eastern periphery of the Ruhr metropolis, between the industrial district and the rural Bördeland landscape, it offers a unique combination of history and modern lighting technology. The 52-metre-high chimney of the Lindenbrauerei, visible from afar, bears the "Fibonacci series" by Mario Merz, which illuminates the night sky in neon blue. Underground, the former cooling cellars and Garbeck enhance the effect of the exhibited objects.
The works of James Turrell, one of the most important representatives of light art, are a highlight of the permanent exhibition. His installations "Floater 99" and "Third Breath" offer fascinating experiences. In addition to Turrell, artists such as Christian Boltanski and Olafur Eliasson have also created permanent installations. The "International Light Art Award" has been promoting innovative light art since 2015. The center is only accessible as part of a guided tour, although some installations are restricted due to structural conditions.
