The “Westernkottener Warte” brine spring, tapped in 1845, was used primarily for salt production until 1949. Today, the brine is used for bathing and open-air inhalation at the graduation towers.

The “Westernkottener Warte” brine spring was tapped in 1845. The borehole is 78 meters deep.
The spring was discovered by chance while searching for rock salt. Instead, the workers struck brine, which initially gushed from the borehole in a large fountain. Until 1949, the abundant spring was used primarily for salt production and, to a lesser extent, for therapeutic purposes.
With the cessation of salt production in 1949 and the founding of Solbad Westernkotten GmbH in 1950, Westernkotten began its development into a spa town. Since then, the brine has been used exclusively for bathing facilities as well as for health-promoting and health-preserving treatments at the two graduation towers.
